Microsoft is following in the Apple Store model with plans to open its own chain of retail stores. The software giant has hired David Porter, a former Dreamworks executive and 25-year veteran of retailer Wal-Mart, to get the plans for Microsoft Stores off the ground. His new role will be as corporate vice president of a new Retail Stores division at the company. At present, there are 200 Apple Stores. Microsoft, like its competitor Apple, wants it's cut in the U.S. retailing sector.

Microsoft's decision to open retail stores is being viewed by some as a calculated risk, a task that will be more difficult than Apple Stores which were opened 8 years ago. The company offered little about its specific plan for the stores or where it would open its first one, saying only that it wanted to "transform the PC and Microsoft buying experience," according to a press statement.

Facebook, the fastest growing social network online, is caught between sharing information and getting control over that information on the Internet. The discussion came about when a consumer advocate's blog shined a light onto the pages of legal language many users don't read when joining and using the website. The terms of service page usually outlines proper conduct and grant a license to companies to store users' data. Unknown to many users, the terms frequently give broad power to site owners.

This month, when Facebook updated it's terms, it removed a provision that stated users could remove their content at any time, at which time the license would expire. Moreover, it added new language stating that Facebook would keep users' content and license even after an account was deleted.

Facebook, the most popular social network, has 175 million users worldwide--most of its growth is through users joining from outside the United States. 18,000 users have already deleted their Facebook accounts in protest to the new measures.

The question that remains is--what does this mean for you? This means that Facebook can keep your personal information, personal photos, profile content and images for their use--forever. Most of us would not want our personal information sold or if you are a graphic designer, you may want to retain the copyrights and permissions to share your work.

Google Product Ideas is a Google engine application by some members of the Google team that allows users to submit new ideas for other users to vote on. The best ideas may get implemented by Google into working products and services. Product ideas also has an official blog for updates. Google Product ideas opened up in December of 2008 with ideas for Google Mobile.

According to their first blog post, Google Product Ideas is currently focused on mobile development:
QUOTE
At Google, we know we've got some really great users with some really great ideas, and we're excited to open up a new project called Product Ideas, a platform through which we're taking a new approach to feedback for Google mobile products. Whether it's a feature request, a crazy idea, a rave or a rant, we want to hear it. Even more, we want other users to hear it, to see what others are buzzing about, and to be able to vote on all these ideas.

The Google Product Ideas FAQ page shows that there will be more products included:
QUOTE
We love that you have thoughts about our other products! Currently, we're in the process of rolling out Product Ideas pages for other Google Products, so stay tuned more information.

Feel free to join Google in coming up with new Product Ideas and voting on submitted ones!

Google updated its toolbar PageRank (PR) values on the New Years Eve of 2009. The update has been completed. Every 3 to 4 months Google updates the PageRank data that's shown in the toolbar. The PageRank is a floating-point number. Google's internal PR computations have many more degrees of resolution than the 0 to 10 values shown in the toolbar.

Google PR is computed continuously; there are machines that take inputs to the PageRank algorithm at Google and compute the resulting PageRanks. So at any given time, a URL in Google's system has an up-to-date PR as a result of running the computation with the inputs to the algorithm. From time-to-time, that internal PageRank value is exported so that it's visible to Google Toolbar users.

Facebook is growing faster like a wildfire. The social network recently released stats that show its active-user count at 140 million. It is estimated that Facebook is growing by an incredible 600,000 to 700,000 users per day! Earlier this year, the company's network was growing by 250,000 users per day.

Statistics firms like Nielsen, ComScore, and Compete.com have all found Facebook's U.S. user-count to be between 47 million and 50 million. This is still smaller than the 60 million U.S. visitors that the rival MySpace social network pulls in. Facebook's growth is primarily overseas as of now, and its international pull is responsible for the skyrocketing numbers.

Google added video and voice features to the Gmail chat feature. The free plug-in lets users start a video and voice (or voice-only) session within Gmail. It's available to both Mac and PC users and the plug-in just needs to be downloaded once. Users can switch to a full screen view or pop out the chat window and change the size as desired.

The news comes at a time of increased business interest in more collaborative technologies such as instant messaging services and social networks. Specialized video conferencing tools and systems have been available for years and, more recently, a variety vendors have offered Web-based video chat and conferencing software including networking giant Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) via its purchase of WebEx. Google added a Video application to its Google Apps Premier Suite in September.

Gmail is part of Google's Apps Premier suite for business that competes more directly with Microsoft's Office suite.

US News & World Report, long the number three newsmagazine in the United States behind Time and Newsweek, has become the latest US media outlet to abandon print for the Web.

The move to become an Internet-based publication was announced to US News employees in a memo on Tuesday from management of the magazine.

"We're accelerating this transformation in response to our rapid growth online where our audience is now about 7 million unique hits a month and growing," US News president Bill Holiber and editor Brian Kelly said in the memo.

"For all of you who have worked so hard to make this transition possible, say good-bye to Web 2.0 and welcome to Journalism 5.0," they added.

Like other US magazines and newspapers, US News has been losing readership and advertising revenue to online media for years.

Earlier this year, US News announced it was "moving away from a weekly magazine with a discrete website to become a multi-platform digital publisher of news you can use and analysis."

The shift to the Web by US News comes just a week after the 100-year-old Christian Science Monitor announced plans to end its daily print edition and become the first national US newspaper to become entirely Web-based.

The Christian Science Monitor plans major changes in April 2009 that are expected to make it the first newspaper with a national audience to shift from a daily print format to an online publication that is updated continuously each day.
